Guilderland Library Notes for Thursday, August 29, 2013

The end of summer is near, bringing fall’s colors, crisp nights, and a whole new crop of books being read by the book discussion groups at the Guilderland Public Library. Join in the fun, there’s something for everyone. To sign up, call 456-2400, at ext. 2, and let us know what group you’d like to join.

Here’s what we’re reading for the next few months:

Snoops in the Stacks meets Mondays at 7 p.m. to discuss:

Believing the Lie, by Elizabeth George On Sept. 16;

Mission to Paris, by Alan Furst on Oct. 7; and

—  Gone Girl, by Gillian Flynn on Nov. 4.

Night Owls meets on Mondays at 7:30 p.m. to discuss:

Sweet Tooth, by Ian McEwan on Sept. 9;

My Beloved World, by Sonia Sotomayor on Oct. 14; and

The Aviator’s Wife, by Melanie Benjamin on Nov. 12, a Tuesday.

Knit One, Read Too meets on Wednesdays at 2 p.m. to discuss:

—  The Light Between the Oceans, by M.L. Stedman on Sept. 11;

Digging to America, by Anne Tyler on Oct. 9; and

Half-Broke Horses, by Jeannette Walls on Nov. 13.

 Great Books meets on Thursdays at 7 p.m. to discuss:

The Idiot, by Fyodor Dostoyevsky on Sept. 12;

The Sun Also Rises, by Ernest Hemingway on Oct. 10; and

The House of the Seven Gables, by Nathaniel Hawthorne on Nov. 7.

 Upcoming films

Two delightful films will soon be shown at the library.  The first, on Wednesday, Sept. 4, at 6:30 p.m., is Singing in the Rain with Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor, and Debbie Reynolds.  It’s something to see Gene Kelly dancing up and down the curb when his larger-than-life image is projected on the Helderberg Room’s big screen.

Family fare rules the day when we screen an epic film on Friday evening, Sept. 6, at 7 p.m.  This epic movie is rated PG, and is delightful when seen up-close-and-personal on the big screen.  There will be free popcorn at both movies.  Enjoy!

  Library closed

The library will be closed Saturday, Aug. 31; Sunday, Sept. 1; and Monday, Sept. 2 for the Labor Day holiday.
