Guilderland Library Notes for Wednesday, April 22, 2015

The Guilderland Public Library will be closed all day Wednesday, April 29, for the annual Staff Development Day.

Gala sold out

Thank you to the couple of hundred of you who are attending the Guilderland Library Foundation’s sold-out Inaugural Gala, A Novel Affair, on Saturday, April 25; the Foundation really appreciates your support. The event is held at Mallozzi’s Clubhouse at the Western Turnpike Golf Course, and the doors open at 6 p.m. We’re looking forward to seeing you there.  — Rosemary Revoir, Foundation President.

Kids’ fun

Children in pre-kindergarten through grade two are invited to GPL on Saturday, April 25, at 10:30 a.m., to share a fun morning of number games and activities with WMHT public television education facilitator, Barbara Lukas and Peg + Cat.

We will use patterns to create colorful glow in-the-dark necklaces, play domino games to practice patterns and number skills, try dice games to work on addition and subtraction skills, and make Peg + Cat themed puppets.

An adult caregiver must accompany each child with whom to share the number fun and games. Please call 456-2400, ext. 4 to register, or register via the events calendar on guilpl.org.

DIY shaggy loop chain maille bracelet

Teens are invited to come to GPL on Monday, April 27, at 6:30 p.m., to make a cool accessory for you, a friend, or maybe a mother's day gift for mom.

This class is taught by Jacqui Hauser, owner of the Studio for Art and Craft in Cobleskill. Please bring $5 to cover the cost of materials. Note: This class will not run with fewer than 14 participants. Teens and adults are welcome. Please call 456-2400, ext. 4 to register, or register via the events calendar on guilpl.org.

A Preservation Week event

Learn what you can do to protect your collectables at Preserve Family Archives at GPL on Tuesday, April 28, at 6:30 p.m.

Even if you don’t have a perfect place to maintain your archives, there are a lot of things you can do to protect them from damage. Karen E.K. Brown and Ann C. Kearney will teach you about possible risks from handling and the environment, and give you practical, inexpensive ideas to keep collections safe to help ensure what you have can be shared for many years to come.

The focus will be on book and paper collections. This class is tailored to anyone interested in practical ways of preserving archival collections, including individuals and family collectors, and curators and custodians of small to medium libraries, museums, archives, historical societies, and town offices.

Karen E.K. Brown is the Preservation Librarian for the University at Albany, SUNY, University Libraries, and Ann Carroll Kearney is the Collections Conservator for the University at Albany, SUNY, University Libraries.

Please call 456-2400, ext. 2 to register, or register via the events calendar on guilpl.org.

“Old Lace and Arsenic”

If you’re a fan of light-hearted comedies with a dark twist, or if you’re a Cary Grant fan — or if you’re both — then you simply must come to the next Classic Film — think about arsenic, and old lace. This film is showing at GPL on Thursday, April 30, at 6:30 p.m.

Grant plays a drama critic who discovers — on his wedding day — that his two beloved maiden aunts are, in fact, homicidal maniacs who have cultivated a “garden” in their basement. (It’s not as grisly as it seems.) Couple his aunts’ antics with an uncle who is convinced he’s Teddy Roosevelt charging up (stairs) San Juan Hill, add direction by Frank Capra, and you have a wonderful screwball comedy.

There’s free popcorn, so enjoy.  And don’t let the Peter Lorre or Raymond Massey characters creep you out … too much.
