Three pulmonologists join AMC

Albany Medical Center’s Department of Pulmonology and Critical Care has three new fellowship-trained pulmonologists who have been appointed assistant professors of medicine. They will treat the full range of lung diseases and disorders, and offer specialized treatment to patients with complex conditions. They are:

— Ariel Jaitovich, M.D., whose areas of expertise include interstitial lung disease, sarcoidosis, pneumonia, pulmonary infections, pulmonary embolism, and asthma. Jaitovich received his medical degree from the University of Buenos Aires. He completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at Stroger Hospital of Cook County, and received his fellowship training in pulmonology and critical care at Northwestern University-Chicago.

Jaitovich’s specialties also include the treatment of pulmonary complications related to connective tissue diseases, scleroderma-associated ILD, and muscle dysfunction in critical illness. He is triple board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in medicine, pulmonary diseases, and critical care medicine;

— Munish Luthra, M.D., who treats patients with diseases that include lung cancer and cancer-related pleural effusion, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, ILD, and asthma. He received his medical degree from Calicut Medical College in India and completed two residencies in internal medicine, one from L.L.R.M. Medical College in India and one from Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York.

Luthra completed a fellowship in critical care medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in pulmonary medicine at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. His specialties also include the treatment of chemotherapy-induced pulmonary toxicity and pulmonary disease, and pulmonary complications that result from bone marrow transplant and solid organ transplant; and

— Muhammad Perwaiz, M.D., who specializes in minimally invasive procedures to diagnose and treat lung cancer, as well as complex airway disorders and pleural effusions. A graduate of Allama Iqbal Medical College in Pakistan, Perwaiz completed a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in pulmonary medicine at Interfaith Medical Center in Brooklyn, followed by a fellowship in critical care medicine at The Miriam Hospital in Providence. He completed an advanced fellowship in interventional pulmonary medicine at Cooper University Hospital with rotations to MD Anderson Cancer Institute in southern New Jersey.

Perwaiz is one of the few pulmonologists in the country trained to perform minimally invasive procedures that include bronchoscopies, pleuroscopies, and biopsies for complex plural effusions. He has a particular interest in evaluation of lung nodules incidentally discovered on chest imaging.

Jaitovich and Luthra are now seeing patients at Albany Medical Center, 43 New Scotland Ave. in Albany, and at the North Greenbush Multispecialty Office, 101 Jordan Rd., in Troy.

Perwaiz is seeing patients at Albany Medical Center and the Delmar Multispecialty Suite, 250 Delaware Ave., in Delmar.
