ALBANY COUNTY — District Attorney P. David Soares has appointed two assistant district attorneys as bureau chiefs — Eric M. Galarneau will head the Street Crimes Unit and Shannon K. Corbitt will lead the Major Crimes Unit.

Galarneau, an assistant district attorney since 1999, will supervise five assistant district attorneys and support staff. His unit is responsible for investigating and prosecuting narcotic sale and trafficking cases, illegal weapons cases, and gang related crimes. In addition to his duties as bureau chief, Galarneau also oversees long-term investigations, some of which involve the use of court-authorized electronic surveillance and wiretapping.

In his years with the office, Galarneau has prosecuted homicides, major assaults, violent robberies, and burglaries.  He received his law degree from Albany Law School in 1997. He received a bachelor’s degree from McGill University in Montreal, Canada in 1994. Most recently, he served as bureau chief of the Major Crimes Unit and Public Integrity Unit.

Corbitt, an assistant district attorney since 2001, has been bureau chief of Albany City Court for several years, local court assistant, and member of the Major Crimes Unit.  She has prosecuted burglaries, robberies, assaults, and attempted murder.

In her new post, Corbitt will supervise four assistant district attorneys and support staff.  The unit is responsible for the investigation of and prosecution of burglaries, robberies, assaults, larcenies, and other property related crimes.

Corbitt graduated in 1994 from the University at Albany, receiving a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, and then graduated from Albany Law School in 1997. Prior to coming to the Albany County District Attorney’s Office, Corbitt worked in private practice for a solo practitioner and was an assistant public defender from 1997 to 2001. There, she practiced in local court and ultimately headed the Appeals Unit from 2000 to 2001.
