EAST BERNE — A hardened farm worker in his youth and a dependable mechanic, Willard Dibble was tender with his family ties.

WEST BERNE — Gertrude Perue kept her home neat and her siblings in comfort.

She worked as a hostess at Borelli’s Restaurant in Howes Cave, in Schoharie County, and was a caregiver for many in her family throughout her life.

VOORHEESVILLE — Sheila C. Reilly was never one to sit it out when things got tough. She always stayed active despite complications later in life from having polio as a child.
On Tuesday, March 11, 2014, she died at the age of 70.

KNOX — Cecelia Shafer gave cards and conversation — for any occasion and anyone dear — and didn’t expect anything in return.

Her blue eyes and smile greeted customers of The Altamont Supermarket, acquaintances at the Knox Volunteer Fire Company Ladies’ Auxiliary, or members of St. Lucy’s Church in Altamont.

Guilderland High School students from the 1950s and ’60s are mourning the death of their revered history teacher, Dr. Robert Harper Babcock.

EAST BERNE — Patrick Stempel was straight with his words, his care, and his chainsaw.

Milena Coton, who left Communist Czechoslovakia and became a designer at General Electric, died on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014. She was 87.

She had lived at the Manor of Carpenters Estates in Lakeland, Fla. with her loving husband of 42 years, Harry P. Coton.

LATHAM — A man who helped generations of Siena College students serve urban youth, James E. Snyder died on Friday, Feb. 28, 2014. He was 78.
The son of the late John and Katherine (née Walsh) Snyder was born on Dec. 25, 1935 in Elmhurst, N.Y. 

ALTAMONT — Once the head teller in Altamont’s bank, Frances Eliza Severson Cowan was devoted to her family and loved the “piece of heaven” where she lived.

She died on Friday, Feb. 21, 2014. She was 91.
