Suicide at Thacher Park
By Saranac Hale Spencer
NEW SCOTLAND Park police found the body of 42-year-old Michael Tommaney II, of Latham, at the foot of the scenic overlook at Thacher Park on Tuesday, June 28.
Officers found his car at about 9:30 p.m. on June 27 and discovered his body, with the assistance of the Albany County Sherriff’s Department, the following morning, according to Dan Keefe, spokesman for the state’s Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation.
A missing-person report for Tommaney had been filed with the Colonie Police Department earlier.
It is the first suicide at the park this year, Keefe said.
After a suicide near the same overlook last November, then-Undersheriff Craig Apple said of the frequency of suicides at the park, “Unfortunately, the numbers are far too high. At least a couple a year.”
Tommaney was a computer programmer fluent in five languages. His obituary is on page 21.
