R’ville man killed in ATV accident

By Zach Simeone

RENSSELAERVILLE — Jonathan Rasa, a 26-year-old man from Las Vegas, was killed in an all-terrain vehicle accident last weekend while visiting his family in Rensselaerville. Police say his vehicle hit a tree.

On Saturday, July 9, at about 10:00 p.m., deputies from the Albany County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to Kenyon Road in Rensselaerville after getting a call about an ATV accident. It was his mother, Margaret Rasa, who found him at the scene.

Rasa, of 9265 Moose Country Place in Las Vegas, Nev., was scheduled to return home the day after the accident.

His sister, Tattiana Gandolfo, recounted her memory of Saturday night.

“My husband and my family have two nieces, and we just came back from Florida, from vacationing at Disney World,” she said, her voice beginning to quiver. “My mother and brother were supposed to be coming back to see us, because he was leaving to go back to Vegas the next day. He went out for a quad ride, and hours went by, and Mom said he was still out, and she was worried. I got a call at 1:30 in the morning, saying that there had been an accident.”

According to a release from the sheriff’s department, “At approximately 7:30 p.m., Rasa told his mother that he was going for one last ride on the ATV before returning home to Nevada. Rasa’s mother became concerned when he did not return to the residence by 10 p.m., so she went to look for him. Mrs. Rasa discovered her son and the wreckage on Kenyon Road and called 911. Emergency crews responded, and it was apparent that Rasa and the ATV collided with a tree, causing fatal injuries.”

After some investigation, sheriff’s deputies determined that Rasa was traveling too fast to make a turn and lost control, colliding with the tree, the release says. Rasa was pronounced dead at the scene.
