Nelligan forms new party, still on GOP line
By Anne Hayden
GUILDERLAND A third political party, the Independent Taxpayer First Party, has been established in Guilderland. Matthew Nelligan, who is making his first run for town board in the fall election, filed 852 signatures on Tuesday to create the party.
Nelligan, slated to run on the Republican line, will now run on two lines; he will be the only person to run on the Independent Taxpayer First Party line.
He told The Enterprise that people of all parties are interested in something different, and are tired of the partisan bickering.
“I wanted something that wasn’t tied to either side, something that wasn’t negative,” said Nelligan. He said he created the party because the issues facing the town are community issues, not Republican or Democratic issues. The focus of the new party is to put taxpayers first, he said.
According to Nelligan, the amount of signatures received demonstrates the hunger for change and reform in Guilderland.
“It was awesome to see all the people willing to help me out on this,” he said.
