Crounse House presents an opportunity for the village

To the Editor:

I am writing in response to the Crounse House article in the Nov. 12 issue of The Altamont Enterprise.

In the relatively short time (6½ years) since my wife and I moved to Altamont, I have witnessed a number of major civic improvements.  These include, but are not limited to, the opening of the new Altamont Free Library, the development of Schilling Park, the publication of “The Images of America” book on Altamont, the annexation of properties along Bozenkill Road, and the rescue of the Altamont Elementary School.

Village residents can be justifiably proud of these and many other accomplishments that continue to make Altamont a great place to live.

After reading the Crounse House article, I feel that the restoration of this historic building presents another opportunity for the village to join together to support a project that will further enhance the character and charm of Altamont.  The restoration of this historic site would be a fitting tribute to the memory of Dr. Crounse for his 60 years of service to our community.

A number of federal, state, and private organizations exist that may provide a source of funding for such an undertaking.  This funding comes in the form of grants, loans, and matching funds.

I suggest that a group be assembled to conduct a project assessment and to recommend a course of action.
