Berne bridge over Fox Creek closed

BERNE — The bridge carrying Route 443 over the Fox Creek in Berne closed on Monday, June 29, and is scheduled to re-open on Aug. 31 as part of an ongoing rehabilitation project.

The project is replacing the bridge that leads into the intersection of Route 443 and Route 156 in Berne. This is the second year of a two-year $2 million project making improvements there.

Work this summer will replace the bridge, which carries an average of 1,231 vehicles per day. Last summer, the adjacent intersection was widened to increase sight distance and allow for wider shoulders and lanes for turning vehicles.

During the bridge closure, signs will designate a detour using Albany County Route 1 (Switzkill Road) and Albany County Route 2 (Cole Hill Road). The intersection of Route 443 and Route 156 will remain open. Local traffic may seek alternate routes.

Fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of a driver’s license.
