Earl Barcomb briefs his trail crew.

KNOX — Boy Scout Earl Barcomb recently completed his Eagle Project — a one-half mile long trail at the Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy’s Winn Preserve on Street Road in Knox.

Most of the trail is along the Helderberg escarpment with beautiful views to the north, toward the Adirondacks. In the foreground, directly below the escarpment, you can see Route 146 and the Township Tavern.

Earl explained that the purpose of an Eagle project is to develop skills in planning, developing, and giving leadership to others while providing a service to another community organization, such as the Land Conservancy.  He led a crew of about a dozen of his friends and their parents.

On Sunday, June 28, beginning at 2 p.m., Earl will lead a hike to explore his new trail.  The hike is open to everyone and will start at the Winn Preserve parking lot on Street Road, about one mile west of the Township Tavern on Route 146.

In addition to exploring the new Eagle Scout Trail, the hike will highlight:

— Historical features of the Winn Preserve, such as the old farm-to-market Truax Road, the main trail through the center of the preserve;

— Karst geology, such as “chimney” rocks and limestone pavement; and

— Special ferns, such as walking fern, maiden-hair fern, and bulblet fern.

Editor’s note: Daniel Driscoll is the steward for the Winn Preserve and served as an Eagle Scout mentor for Earl Barcomb. An audio clip with narrative about the trail by Driscoll and Barcomb is available at the Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy website: http://mohawkhudson.org/our-preserves/winn-hudson-and-nancy-preserve/
