Fast firefighters saved our home

To the Editor:

We would like to take this opportunity to commend both the East Berne and Berne volunteer fire departments for their unbelievably quick response to a 911 call to a fire at our home.

On the evening of April 18, an astute neighbor saw smoke coming from our front deck. Before she had the chance to get off the phone, East Berne fire trucks were roaring up Lakeview Road

They were quickly followed by those from the Berne fire department. The fire was put out in no time, with minimal damage.

The fire had been started by a cigarette butt. Due to the very high winds that day, a spark ignited the flower pot that the ash was in — and the rest could have been history had it not been for the men and women of our Hilltown companies' fast action.

We will forever be truly indebted to these selfless men and women, as well as to our vigilant neighbor.
