Against Cobleskill, softball doesn’t roll Voorheesville’s way

Cool catcher: Katie Hewitt looks toward the Voorheesville bench for a sign from her coach on Tuesday in Voorheesville. The Blackbirds lost to Cobleskill, 7 to 3.

VOORHEESVILLE — Softball pitches can get away from a catcher. Voorheesville Head Coach Matt Fiato says that it’s part of the game.

And it was on Tuesday as some pitches from Voorheesville’s Lauren Dlugolecki passed by catcher Katie Hewitt. Three of those passed balls resulted in three runs for visiting Cobleskill.

However, Hewitt is an unbroken catcher; she made some good stops, too.

“It all depends on where my head is at,” said Hewitt after Voorheesville’s 7-to-3 loss to Cobleskill. “Today wasn’t really my best game.”

Dlugolecki, who got three outs on three pitches in the seventh inning, said that she trusts Hewitt wholeheartedly. “Some days are off,” added the pitcher; she had just thrown seven innings the day before in an 11-to-0 defeat to Schalmont.

Hewitt said that Dlugolecki is a “very accurate” pitcher; she knows where the pitches are going. But after two passed balls and a walk in the third inning, Fiato came out to the mound to check on Dlugolecki’s status.

Dlugolecki said that she felt OK in that moment as she saw Coach Fiato coming. “I gotta try a little harder,” she said. “Try to be less lazy and hustle down.”

After the meeting at the mound, Cobleskill scored a run on a passed ball to go ahead, 3 to 0. An RBI groundout by Paige Roberts made the score 4-to-0.

In the top of the fourth inning, Cassidy Holliday and Morgan Tyrrell reached safely for Cobleskill with a single and a bunt respectively; they moved forward one base on a passed ball. Holliday and Tyrrell each scored on a passed ball to take the Bulldogs’ lead to 6-to-1.

Fiato said that he liked the movement of Dlugolecki’s pitches on Tuesday. But maybe that movement caused Hewitt some trouble behind the plate.

“Defensively, we’re getting better with each game,” Fiato said. “We need to put it all together.”

Voorheesville is winless this season at 0-5. Dlugolecki said that the Blackbirds could be more focused. “We could probably joke around less,” she said, “and be the best team that we can.”

Fiato wasn’t sure about the joking around that Dlugolecki was alluding to, but he said that Voorheesville has young players that are realizing what it means to be on a varsity team.

The Blackbirds made the game interesting in the final inning, getting two runs across, but it was a little too late at that point. “Our opportunities didn’t pan out,” Fiato said.
