Thompsons Lake

On Monday, March 16, I wrote the news and took it to Altamont.

Later in the day, my granddaughter, Kassi Neal, drove me to the Berne Reformed Church to the NEAT dinner at 5 p.m. This time the menu was fresh vegetables, Irish stew, Irish bread, cupcakes decorated with four-leaf clovers, and ice cream.

Kassi enjoyed being with senior citizens, as that’s what she’s been doing for the last eight years at Delmar Place.

On March 17, it was my sister, Pat Sykala’s birthday. I picked up my daughters, Marcia Pangburn and Kathleen Carnevale, and we met Pat at the Window Box in Slingerlands. We were soon joined by Pat’s daughter, Sondra Weigand, and Kathleen’s daughter, Kassi.

We enjoyed lunch and then each one read their card to Pat. After that we went to Stewart’s and had a .50 ice cream.

For dinner, my grandson, Brandon Clark, and I enjoyed homemade vegetable burgers that my daughter, Kathy, made for us. They were delicious. I could enjoy being a vegetarian.

Wednesday, March 18, seemed to fly by. I watered my plants and wrote out some bills and it quickly seemed to be time to go on the dinner visit. Samson’s birthday is coming up, and Brandon drove us to a restaurant in Middleburg. I believe it is called Middle Village Pasta Grill.

Samson and Nichole each ordered calamari. It was a real treat. After that we played checkers, two at a time, and then Old Maid. Samson did his homework before playing games.

On Thursday, March 19, I started thinking about Samson’s birthday party on Saturday. I went to the bank and then to Delmar to buy paper plates, cups, napkins, and silverware. We’re having the party at the East Berne firehouse.

Later, I went to the Bible study at the Knox Reformed Church with Brandon.

On Friday, March 20, I went to CVS for prescriptions, and then to Price Chopper. I came home and cut up the asparagus Brandon bought, and got it all ready to cook. I rode out to Schoharie with Brandon to pick up Samson and Nichole.

When we got back Samson and Brandon fed the chickens, and carried in wood for my stove for the week. Nichole and I got the salmon ready in a baking dish and then into the oven. We got potatoes ready to cook and the asparagus in the other oven.

Then Nichole set the table and we were ready to eat.

Iain Bullis was at a birthday party for his friend, Manes and Jenn had gone to the hospital to see her grandfather, Bob Hughes.

Then came Saturday, March 21. We were having a big family party at the East Berne firehouse because Samson turned 13 on March 23.

Brandon and Jenn had a big assortment of food. There were three kinds of pizza, two kinds of wings, a veggie platter, a fruit platter, and many different kinds of chips. A huge Carvel ice cream cake was for dessert.

The firehouse soon filled up with guests. They were Kassi Neal and Jared Martin, Kathy and Gary Carnevale, Marcia Pangburn and Kyra Swan, Danielle Ricketts and Zoey, and of course, Nichole and Iain.

Then from Fort Plain came David and Wendy Richardson, their daughter Casey Brackett and her four children, Gammy, Ahna, coco and Ni Ni, who are visiting from Colorado. Plus their daughter, Kristy Downes and her son Brantley, just born on March 5. Uncle Miles Pangburn dropped by late and Aunt Melissa Pangburn had to work on the budget.

Jenn’s brother Ryan Smith, his wife Nancy and their son Cooper stopped by, but, Cooper wasn’t feeling well.

The afternoon flew by. Everyone read their greeting cards to Samson, and he received many gifts. It was refreshing and comforting to be with family on a happy occasion.

Sunday, March 22, arrived, and I got a very sad phone call at 7 a.m. Ray’s sister, Norma Ayers, who lives in Middle Granville had passed away. She had a stroke about four years ago, and had had many complications.

We all went to the church. Then Brandon, Jenn, Samson, Nichole, and Iain went to Red Lobster for lunch.

My grandparents came to the United States from Poland about 1915, and brought many Polish traditions with them. My mother taught us that the Polish celebrate every occasion for a week. Samson’s birthday is just one of our events to enjoy for a week.

Every male in Kassi and Jared’s wedding met at the Gentlemen’s Wearhouse at 2 p.m., to be fitted for a tuxedo.

I have gone with Kassi every step of the way and so has her mother, Kathy. We were there with all the gents. They were Joe Beauvegard, Brad Ableman, Miles Pangburn, Brandon Clark, and Samson Clark.

While the boys were getting fitted, Jenn Smith took Nichole shopping for shoes and a necklace for the wedding, and Iain for shoes to wear to the wedding.

Sunday was soon over and I rode with Brandon to take Samson and Nichole back to Schoharie. When I got home I was pleasantly surprised to find my granddaughter, Kyra waiting for me. It’s always relaxing to have a short visit with a teenager. They grow up too quick.
