Men’s and women’s choruses to sing together

Two of the region’s oldest choral groups will be joining for a concert for the first time since 1978.

The Thursday Musical Club, founded in 1913, and the Mendelssohn Club, founded in 1909, will perform on Sunday, April 10, at 2:30 p.m. at the First Reformed Church of Schenectady in the Stockade. The performance is part of the annual spring concert of the Thursday Musical Club.

Each chorus will present a set of songs before joining for selections from “Frostiana” by Randall Thompson based on the poetry of Robert Frost and “Puttin’ on the Ritz” by Irving Berlin. The two Thompson pieces from “Frostiana” that were written for a mixed chorus were on the program in 1978 as well as works by Vivaldi, Brahms, and a selection of Christmas carols.

Both groups will perform songs from Broadway musicals. Selections by the Thursday Musical Club, directed by Julie Panke and accompanied by Elinore Farnum, are from “Forty Second Street” and “Anything Goes.” The Mendelssohn Club, directed by Jeffrey Vredenburg and accompanied by Michael Clement, will sing songs from “Spamalot” and “Oklahoma.”

Jean Hayes is guest flautist.

Tickets for the concert are $15 with a $3 discount for students and seniors.

A reception will follow the concert.
