My heart breaks for Mackenzie Dunnells

To the Editor:

Thank you for your excellent coverage of the bullying issue at Berne-Knox-Westerlo.

Albert Einstein said, "The world will not be destroyed by those who do evil but by those who watch them and do nothing."

Twenty-six incidents of bullying in one year is too many, and five years of suffering by one student is outrageous and borders on criminal negligence.

Despite any "culture," respect for the person and property of others must be upheld. Ethical and moral codes of conduct must be encouraged, taught, and modeled by all staff and students.

Why aren’t those who bully required to get counseling and remain out of school until their behavior changes?

My heart breaks for Mackenzie Dunnells and her family and all who are bullied. My prayers and support are with you and I hope the board will do what is right and pay for Mackenzie to attend another school where she will have an opportunity to have a fresh start and learn in safety and with the support of students and staff
