Alfred Agnew

Alfred Agnew, an easygoing and outgoing man, died on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016 at Haven Hospice in Lake City, Florida, where he had lived. He was 77.

Born on Sept. 6, 1938 in Waterbury, Connecticut, Mr. Agnew was the son of the late Alfred and Adel Agnew and was raised in Delanson on a farm with his family.

Mr. Agnew, known to his friends and family as “Al,” spent over 20 years as a machinist at General Electric in Schenectady, working on big turbines. He then began driving coach buses before driving school buses for several different districts.

He enjoyed woodworking, bingo, camping, yard work, and traveling.

“He was outgoing, never meeting a stranger,” his family wrote in a tribute. “Crazy Al will be missed; may he rest in peace!”

Alfred Agnew is survived by his daughters, Donna Smith of Lake City, Florida, and Kathleen  Sanjurjo and her husband, David, of Johnstown, New York; his granddaughters Amanda McClendon and her husband, Terry, of Lake City, Florida and Abigail Sanjurjo of Johnstown, New York; his grandsons, Cameron and Sara Agnew of Johnstown, New York and Stephen Savage and his wife, Caitlyn, stationed at Fort Hood, Texas; and his great-granddaughters, Sarah Baurle and Eva-Nicole McClendon of Lake City, Florida.

He is also survived by his siblings, Thomas Agnew and his wife, Freda, of Palmdale, California, Lee Martin of Knox, Linda Wigger and her husband, Richard, of Savannah, Georgia, Chris Agnew of Sharon Springs, New York and Scott Agnew of Knox, and his nieces, nephews, and cousins. “Alfred had many others he looked upon as his grandchildren and children that he held dear,” his family wrote.

His companion of over 20 years, Jane Gedney, died before him.

A memorial service will be held at a time yet to be determined. Arrangements are by Gateway-Forest Lawn Funeral Home in Lake City, Florida. Mourners may leave words of love and comfort for the family at www.gatewayforestlawn.com.
