Town seeks input on plans for Westmere corridor

GUILDERLAND — The town is hosting an open house to present a neighborhood plan for Westmere, along Western Avenue.

Anyone that lives in, commutes through, or works in the area is encouraged to drop in at the Westmere firehouse at 1741 Western Ave. between 7 and 8:30 p.m. on Feb. 11.

“The ideas to be discussed in the upcoming meeting build on the town’s ongoing work to revise our zoning and land management tools. Community input will help this planning process as well as other town decision-making,” said Guilderland’s supervisor, Peter Barber, in a release from the town.

With funding from the Capital District Transportation Committee, Guilderland developed a neighborhood plan for the Western Avenue between Church Street on the east and State Farm Road and New Karner Road on the west. The project evaluates transportation and land use enhancements and builds on the recommendations included in the Guilderland Comprehensive Plan and from the first public meeting that was held in April 2015.

The open house will present work on six tasks: a Land Use and Transportation System Assessment; Public Input; Land Development/Redevelopment Plan; Access Management and Streetscape Improvement Strategies; Pedestrian-Bicycle Facilities; and Transit Improvement Strategies and Implementation/ Funding Strategies.

“We hope a wide cross section of the community and stakeholders will come to this open house to learn about the transportation enhancements being proposed. Route 20 is an important corridor, linking many of the area’s major destinations including residences, entertainment, shopping and education” said the release, quoting Chris O’Neil, the study’s project manager from the CDTC. “The project’s focus is to balance suitable growth with high quality of life.”

The town’s consulting team, including IBI Group of Albany, with River Street Planning & Development of Troy, and T.R. Johnson Engineering of Albany, will be available to discuss ideas and is seeking the participation of residents, students, municipal officials, and leaders of businesses both large and small.
