To the Editor:

The first Guilderland town-wide clean up was a huge success [“Our throw-away society is poisoning itself: If you’re not part of the solution, you are part of the problem,”The Altamont Enterprise, April 18, 2024]. The town looks beautiful!

On Saturday, April 27, over 100 volunteers cleaned up the main roads, intersections, and highway ramps, and three large parks in Guilderland. We had high school and college students, Rotary, the Westmere Fire Department, the local “Buy Nothing” group, town board and staff, and families!

On Friday, April 26, several businesses had their employees out also, including Monaco Cooper Lamme, Carr, Ten Eyck Group, Legacy Fitness, Phillips Hardware, and TRU Hotel/Homewood Suites.

The garbage company, West Winds, and town of Guilderland picked up about 110 bags of garbage. The businesses from Friday had about 20 bags of garbage.

Based on weights of garbage I found on the internet, we picked up approximately 2,200 pounds of garbage and that doesn’t include the larger items like tires.

Sponsors CM Fox and Crossgates Mall gave out T-shirts, snacks, bags, and water to the volunteers.
